If you are not interested in a working IWS then you may find the Kennel Club's puppy sales register an ideal place to look for a wider range of IWS litters. Of course, working IWS litters are also advertised through the Kennel Club and breeders of working IWS are more than happy to place puppies in good pet homes. You should also note that the Kennel Club will advertise any registered puppies, provided a fee is paid to them, irrespective of any health screening having been carried out or not, by the breeder.

Information for breeders (& potential breeders)
If you are a breeder or potential breeder and a member of the Sporting Irish Water Spaniel Club we will advertise details of your litter on this web site free of charge, including photos.
We will not, however, advertise litters where both parents have not been hip scored in advance of mating and where the bitch is under two years old. In addition, excessively priced puppies may also be excluded (remember, we are a working gundog club and with others, custodians of a vulnerable breed)
.
We will tho' be happy to advertise litters where the parents do not have a working background provided this is clearly stated.
Please also be aware that the KC will no longer register puppies from close matings (effective 1st March 2009) and the SIWSC will not advertise or assist breeders in placing puppies from such litters.

If you have not bred before but are interested in doing so we can give advice and help you find homes for your puppies. However, it should be noted that IWS are not the easiest of breeds to find suitable homes for and it is ultimately the breeders responsibility to ensure suitable homes are found.

Please contact Louise Bailey by e mail louise@octobercottage.freeserve.co.uk
or telephone +44 (0)1782 551026 for further details.

Please note: the SIWSC reserves the right (without explanation) not to advertise litters of members.

UK Irish Water Spaniel registration statistics

The list below shows the numbers of individual dogs registered with the Kennel Club since 1984. For each year, the figure is mostly made up of puppy registrations but there are usually 1 or 2 imported dogs, puppies and/or adults included in these figures.
The Irish Water Spaniel is considered by the Kennel Club as a vulnerable native breed of Britain and Ireland. They use an arbitrary but useful figure of 300 registrations, below which a native breed is considered vulnerable. Of the current list of 25 breeds the IWS is ranked 10th most vulnerable in 2008, down from 18th in 2007. The original list consisted of 28 breeds but 3 have been removed after consultation with the relevant Breed Clubs.
